Under the ecoEnergy Retrofit program, homeowners can take advantage of grants when improving the energy efficiency of their homes. Below are steps taking you through specified areas where you can improve your home's energy consumption.

Heating Equipment
ENERGY STAR furnaces optimize the fuel being used to heat your home. The higher the efficiency of the furnace, the greater the savings every time you use it, and this increases as fuel prices rise.

The heat recovery ventilator (HRV) system works by collecting and exhausting indoor air and drawing in and distributing outdoor air. Typically, an HRV will remove 70 to 80 percent of the heat from the exhaust air and transfer it to the incoming air, dramatically reducing the energy required to heat the outdoor air.

Replacing your old air conditioner with an ENERGY STAR model can greatly reduce the energy required to cool your home during the summer. There are two basic kinds of air conditioners - room air conditioners and central air conditioners.

Like home heating, the higher the efficiency of the water heating system the more money you will save. Water heating typically accounts for up to 20 percent of your total utility costs.

Attic Insulation
Proper insulation improves your home's energy consumption. The higher the R-value the more efficient the insulation is at holding back heat, keeping your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Adding insulation to your attic is generally the easiest and most affordable place to insulate. This calculation is based on an average roof size of 40' x 60'.

Did you know it is through your home's walls where the most heat is lost? Improper or poor insulation in exterior walls can cause up to 35 percent of the heat loss in your home. Insulating walls correctly will retain more heat and lower heating costs. This calculation is based on an outside surface of 5000 square feet.

Installing insulation is an excellent way to conserve even greater amounts of energy. Consider installing insulation in areas that might include a non-insulated floor over a garage or crawlspace. Select the amount of exposed floor you will insulate.

Basement Insulation
